Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of Louisiana has been in some form of quarantine now for nearly 80 days.

On May 11th, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced a plan to lift his "Stay at Home". That brought about the start of the state's reopening, commonly called Phase 1. This new phase was loosely based on reopening guidelines put forward by the White House earlier this year. However, Louisiana's Phase 1 didn't follow the White House guidelines that closely.

The biggest separation from the White House plan is that Louisiana will not use a two-week timeline for Phase 1, they will be using a three-week timeline. That three week timeline ends later this week. Which is why today, Governor Edwards announced the state will move into Phase 2 of reopening.

Again, the reopening Phase in Louisiana will look different than the guidance the White House put forward. Here's some of what Louisiana's Phase 2 will look like:

  • Phase 2 will start on June 5th, and will again run for three weeks, unlike the two week window the White House pushes.
  • Businesses, including retail and restaurants will now be able to run at 50% capacity.
  • Bars will be able to operate at 25% capacity of "seated" occupation. This will include bars that do not serve food.
  • Tattoo Parlors, swimming pools, spas, food courts, bowling alleys, pool halls and massage parlors can open, under restrictions, for the first time since late March.
  • Casinos and video poker establishments may expand operations to 50% capacity and 75% of gaming positions, under the guidance established by the Gaming Control Board.
  • Amusement parks, both indoor and outdoor, will remain closed during Phase 2.
  • All employees dealing with the public will still be required to wear face masks during Phase 2.

Social Distancing will still be a major part of these guidelines. Which will require shoppers, casino players, and restaurant guests, to maintain 6 foot distance.
