There are about a dozen doctors in the lake area who will soon see a boom in business. Lake Charles' first medical marijuana pharmacy opened this morning at 1727 Imperial Boulevard off Nelson Road and will be open Monday through Friday. There are a dozen local doctors who are specially licensed and trained by the state to diagnose and prescribe marijuana for you.

Surveys show a great deal of the American population is ready for more, if not all, deregulation as far as the plant goes. Users cite relief over a large area of symptoms including pain, glaucoma, MD, spasms, PTSD, seizures, and more. And in such as it grows out of the ground, many say it's a natural remedy for many things.

But unlike a Colorado recreational dispensary, Louisiana has only licensed medical use of the plant. Therefore, you obtain it at a pharmacy with a prescription written by a doctor. And the doctor has to be specially licensed by the state to be able to recommend marijuana to a patient.

Don't think you're going to cruise into the doc's office and score an ounce for the weekend. It does not work like that. This will be a real physical exam, with questions that must be sincerely answered over a variety of topics that could put you into the lane of those prescribed to.

Your prescription won't come to you in a Ziploc baggie, either. There are a variety of delivery methods including tinctures, oils, sprays, capsules, chewables, lotions, patches, and even suppositories.

There are eight other marijuana pharmacies opening in the state over nine regions. In addition to Lake Charles, which serves Region 5, there are New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houma, Lafayette, Alexandria, Shreveport, West Monroe, and Madisonville.
